INTRODUCTION

UConn?s Facilities Operations Department has one opening for a Skilled Trades Apprentice - Carpentry position.  This position will receive on-the-job training and vocational education in order to complete the requirements of a QCW Carpentry job classification within a period of time normally not to exceed two years.

This Skilled Trades Apprentice - Carpentry position is a permanent, full-time, 37.5 hours/week position.  The work schedule is Monday through Friday 7:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m.  The hourly rate is $24.61 and is non-negotiable. Please note, the hourly rate is increasing to $25.23 on June 28, 2024.

This position is categorized as Emergency Support Services/Essential Staff. Must be willing and able to work during emergency closures/delayed openings due to inclement weather or for significant events that affect campus operations.  Applicants must also be willing to respond to emergencies on overtime (nights, weekends, and holidays).    Please note that Facilities Operations NP-2 employees may also be required to perform job duties as assigned at any of the Regional Campuses.

PLEASE NOTE:  ON-THE-JOB TRAINING RECEIVED AT THE SKILLED TRADES APPRENTICE - CAPRENTRY LEVEL WILL BE PRIMARILY ON 1 ST SHIFT, DURING THE ESTABLISHED WORK HOURS, BUT SOME TRAINING MAY BE REQUIRED TO BE COMPLETED ON OVERTIME DURING EVENING HOURS, OR ON WEEKENDS.  ONCE THE SUPERVISOR AND MANAGER DETERMINE THAT THE TRAINING REQUIREMENTS HAVE BEEN MET FOR THE SKILLED TRADES APPRENTICE ? CARPENTRY POSITION, AND IT HAS BEEN DETERMINED THAT THE APPRENTICE POSSESSES THE ABILITY TO WORK INDEPENDENTLY AT THE TARGET LEVEL OF THE POSITION, THE APPRENTICE WOULD THEN BE PROMOTED TO THE TARGET LEVEL OF QCW CARPENTRY.  APPRENTICES ARE EVALUATED AT THREE MONTHS, SIX MONTHS AND ANNUALLY.  AN APPRENTICE MUST COMPLETE AT LEAST ONE YEAR OF EMPLOYMENT IN ORDER TO BECOME ELIGIBLE TO BE PROMOTED TO THE TARGET LEVEL OF QCW; MOST APPRENTICES ARE PROMOTED TO THE TARGET LEVEL WITHIN A PERIOD NORMALLY NOT TO EXCEED TWO YEARS.

This position is categorized as ?Open to the Public? and current, qualified UConn NP-2 employees will be given preference in the hiring process.

  • The Skilled Trades Apprentice - Carpentry job search is established for an entry-level apprentice that has less than four years of combined experience/education in the carpentry trade. Those applicants that have four or more years of combined education and experience in the carpentry trade and have demonstrated that they have become proficient in a wide range of technical skills used in the carpentry trade, will be disqualified.

EXAMPLES OF DUTIES

Receives training to perform tasks as outlined in the specification for the Skilled Trades Apprentice target class; receives on-the-job training to supplement prior vocational or technical training in respective trade area; performs increasingly difficult and skilled tasks requiring application of trade skills, codes, and standard trade practices under supervision; assists in estimating time, personnel and material needs on assigned projects; assists in maintenance of necessary records, logs, etc.; performs duties related to trade or similar trade areas as required; at state-owned airports may be required to stand by for and respond to fire and/or crash emergencies; may be required to assist in snow removal operations during emergency situations; performs related duties as required.

At UConn, the Skilled Trades Apprentice - Carpentry will receive training in all aspects of the carpentry trade.  Please note that some training may be required on other shifts, weekends or on overtime. This position will receive training from QCW Carpentry employees.   The candidate hired for this position will work alongside QCW Carpentry employees to learn how to perform highly skilled tasks in accordance with national and local codes and standard trade practices.  The Skilled Trades Apprentice - Carpentry employee will be provided with hands-on and educational opportunities in the following examples of carpentry tasks:  performs alterations, repairs, and maintenance of structures and facilities; performs skilled bench work, operating with such equipment as power saws, jointers, wood lathes, planers, boring, sanding and mortising machines; builds and repairs cabinets; cleans, sharpens and repairs hand and bench tools; lays resilient flooring and Formica.  The Skilled Trades Apprentice - Carpentry will gain knowledge and the ability to apply standard tools, materials, methods, and practices of the carpentry trade. 

KNOWLEDGE, SKILL, AND ABILITY

Knowledge of standard tools, materials, methods, and practices of particular trade area; some interpersonal skills; some oral and written communication skills; ability to perform on a skilled level in particular trade; ability to make estimates and keep shop records; ability to follow written and oral instructions; some ability to utilize computer software.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS ? GENERAL EXPERIENCE

Graduation from a vocational or technical school with a diploma designating completion of the subject requirements in the respective maintenance trade area.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS ? SUBSTITUTIONS ALLOWED

Possession of 4,000 registered on-the-job training (OJT) apprenticeship program hours, recognized by the Department of Labor?s Office of Apprenticeship, along with related instruction hours in the respective maintenance trade area may be substituted for the General Experience for licensed trades (Electrical, Plumbing, HVACR) only.

PROMOTION

Non-Licensed Trades:

A Skilled Trades Apprentice who successfully completes the Internship Training Program shall be promoted to the target class for non-licensed trades no sooner than completing six (6) months of satisfactory work performance.

Licensed Trades (Electrical, Plumbing, HVACR):

  1. A Skilled Trades Apprentice hired into this position based on the allowed substitution of 4,000 registered on-the-job training (OJT) apprenticeship program hours and related instruction hours in the respective maintenance trade area, must obtain graduation from the vocational or technical school prior to promotion to the Skilled Trades Apprentice target class.
  2. A Skilled Trades Apprentice who obtains their occupational trade license after completing six (6) months of satisfactory work performance shall be promoted to the Skilled Trades Apprentice target class effective the first pay period following the date they obtained their occupational trade license.
  3. A Skilled Trades Apprentice who obtains their occupational trade license before completing six (6) months of satisfactory work performance must complete their initial six (6) month working test period prior to being promoted to the Skilled Trades Apprentice target class.  The promotion shall be effective the first day of the pay period following the date they completed their six (6) month training period.
  4. Upon completion of their initial six (6) month working test period and satisfactory work performance a Skilled Trades Apprentice who achieves a minimum of 4,000 hours of work experience in their designated occupational trade shall be appointed to a General Trades Worker position.
  5. For current state employees compensation will be in accordance with guidelines for computing salary adjustments set forth by the Department of Administrative Services, Determining Salary Upon Change in Class manual.

SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS

  1. Incumbents in this class may be required by the appointing authority to possess appropriate current licenses, permits and/or certifications.
  2. Incumbents in this class may be required to travel.
  3. Applicants must have a current motor vehicle operator license.

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS

  1. Incumbents in this class must have adequate physical strength, stamina, physical agility and visual and auditory acuity, and must maintain such physical fitness as to be able to perform the duties.
  2. A physical examination may be required.
  3. Incumbents in this class will be required to drive and operate motor vehicles, including, but not limited to vans, box trucks, and pick-up trucks ranging in size from compact, midsize, full-size, and heavy-duty, some of which are equipped with lift gates.
  4. Incumbents must have adequate physical strength and agility to walk up and down stairs frequently and climb ladders independently. Must be able lift, carry and push material weighing up to 75 lbs. Must have the ability to utilize ladders, scaffolding, high-lifts and enter confined spaces. Must be able to perform inspections, alterations, repairs and maintenance of structures and facilities.  Incumbents must possess the ability to utilize tools, perform the required duties set forth above and will be required to wear personal protective equipment (PPE) when necessary.

WORKING CONDITIONS

  1. Incumbents in this class may be required to lift moderate to heavy weights; may be exposed to extreme weather conditions and to risk of injury from equipment.
  2. Incumbents in this class may be required by the appointing authority to complete an asbestos removal program consistent with EPA guidelines for operations and maintenance. Incumbents may be required to use protective equipment such as respirators and safety goggles.

APPOINTMENT

  1. This class is intended to permit the hiring and training of employees for the Skilled Trades Apprentice target class. An employee may be appointed to this class for a period normally not to exceed two (2) years, which generally requires 2000 hours of internship/apprenticeship experience.
  2. After one (1) year of overall satisfactory performance, the salary of the Skilled Trades Apprentice shall be adjusted to TC 14 Step 3.
