Your Specific Responsibilities:

This position with the Orange County Special Supplemental Nutrition Program for Women, Infants and Children (WIC) is primarily responsible for providing nutrition education and counseling for high risk and medically high-risk clients, as well as breastfeeding promotion, education, and support for WIC clients. Travel may be required. Licensure by the Department of Health, Division of Medical Quality Assurance as a licensed Dietitian/Nutritionist is mandatory. A Registered Dietitian or eligibility to take the examination for the Registered Dietitian is desirable.

 

Performs nutrition assessment, provides culturally relevant nutrition counseling, develops high risk nutrition care plans, and completes appropriate

documentation of services provided in the WIC data system and/or medical file using SOAP format. Provides specialized care for medically high-risk

clients, assist with management and issuance of Medical Foods as needed. Prepares and/or assists in the preparation and selection of nutrition

education materials for use in nutrition and breastfeeding individual counseling sessions and group presentations. Determines nutritional risk and/or

income eligibility and certifies eligible participants to the WIC program in accordance with DHM 150-24. Whenever possible, the determination of income

eligibility and/or nutrition risk eligibility and issuance functions must be separate in order to ensure program integrity as stated in DHM 150-24, page 3-1,

section 3-2c.

 

Evaluates program eligibility status of each client to ensure that a valid issuance of electronic benefits can be performed. Issues WIC Program electronic benefits to certified participants in accordance with procedures outlined in DHM 150-24 and the Florida WiSE System Manual. Schedules appointments for participants through the WIC appointment system. Reviews use of electronic benefits in approved grocery stores. Provides information on WIC and Nutrition program services to clients, departmental staff, community organizations/agencies and the public to facilitate access to program services.

 

Acts as the Lead Public Health Nutritionist during the absence of the Public Health Nutrition Supervisor/ Senior Public Health Nutrition Supervisor. This will include reports to the Senior Managers daily updates on clinic staffing situation, facilities problems, meeting attendance, urgent decision making as needed.

 

Participates in quality assurance and monitoring activities. Maintains up to date knowledge in the current theory and practice of nutrition, dietetics, and breastfeeding. Prepares and/or assists in the preparation and selection of nutrition education lesson plans and materials for use in nutrition and breastfeeding individual counseling sessions and group presentations. Prepares employee activity reports of time and services provided and summarizes nutrition services and activities at biweekly intervals. Participates in community outreach events and comprehensive nutrition program activities as requested.

Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

Knowledge of the current science and practice of nutrition and dietetics. Knowledge of nutritional and dietary assessment techniques. Ability to communicate effectively both orally and in writing. Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationship with others. Ability to develop educational/training techniques to learning. Ability to apply educational plans and materials. Ability to analyze and interpret anthropometric, biochemical, dietary and clinical data. Knowledge of basic mathematical calculations. Knowledge of WIC program policies and procedures.

Minimum Qualifications:

  • One years of professional experience in the nutrition and dietetic field; or have a master’s degree from an accredited college or university recognized by the Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics in public health nutrition, dietetics, food and nutrition or food service management and one year of experience.
  • A verifiable license as a Dietitian/Nutritionist in accordance with Chapter 468, Florida Statutes.
  • Current experience with the Florida WIC Program .
  • Current Florida Department of Health Employee
  • Willing to work before, during, and/or beyond normal work hours or days in the evernt of an emergency. This many  include working in a special needs or Red Cross shelter, or performing other emergency duties including, but not limited to, responses to or threats involving any disaster or threat of disaster, man-made or natural. Emergency duties may also include in-state and/or out-of-state deployment.
