Requirements
- Qualifications:
- Education: at minimum, Associate's degree in Medical Laboratory Technology or a related field (Bachelor of Science Degree or Associates Degree in Medical Technology, or Clinical Laboratory Science or a primary science (i.e., Biology, Chemistry, Microbiology, etc.)).
- Certification: Must hold a current Medical Laboratory Technician (MLT) or Medical Technologist (MT) certification from the American Society of Clinical Pathology (ASCP) or other recognized agencies such as AMT, AAB.
- BLS Certification
- Experience: A minimum of 2 years of clinical laboratory experience as a generalist medical technologist performing CLIA high complexity work in Hematology, Chemistry, Microbiology, transfusion medicine, and urinalysis sections of the Core Laboratory.
- Proficiency in laboratory procedures and techniques
- Strong attention to detail and commitment to quality
- Ability to work collaboratively in a team-oriented environment
- Excellent problem-solving and communication skills
Job Duties:
- Serve as a Medical Laboratory Technologist/Technician in the Clinical Laboratory of the SFIHC. Performing a variety of standardized routine and specialized procedures in the areas of Chemistry, Hematology, Serology, Urinalysis, Coagulation, Phlebotomy, Specimen, and dispatch requirements. Medical Technologist will need to be proficient with the hospital information system, RPMS (Resource Patient Management System), which is the main method of processing patient specimen and reporting patient test results.
- Provide a full range of medical laboratory care to patients seen at SFIHC including laboratory testing, maintenance of diagnostic equipment, operate automated equipment and perform complex manual procedures in Chemistry, Microbiology, Urinalysis, Coagulations, Phlebotomy, Specimen and special dispatch and specimen requirements, quality controls and other diagnostics required by Laboratory Supervisor.
- Perform phlebotomy on various age groups: (infants to geriatric ages) and familiar with requirements and equipment for each age group, such as finger sticks, heel sticks and venipuncture with different needle gauges. Withdraws appropriate quantities of blood by venipuncture, capillary, and/or arterial puncture as required. Collect appropriate specimen for lab testing according to established lab procedures.
- Perform satisfactory standards of competence, conduct, appearance and integrity. Must complete competencies in a timely matter and be able to work independently without supervision after a successful completion of competence.
- Ensures patient ID, and maintains patient confidentiality to meet patient safety goals.
- Performs required recordkeeping procedures and reports discrepancies to appropriate technologist or COR for patient results, demographics, QC, QA, and performance improvement.
- Performs start up, shut-down, daily, weekly, monthly, and quarterly preventative maintenance procedures on analyzers and other testing procedures on instrumentation in Chemistry, Hematology, Urinalysis, and Serology (Cepheid) as assigned or instructed. Clean work area(s) daily, restock departments daily and help with cleaning refrigerator(s) and freezer every six months. Document performance and initialize when completed daily.
- Recognizes factors, which can adversely affect specimens, procedures, and results and is capable of determining whether procedures, specimens, or results have been affected, then performs corrective action as needed (including sequestering patient samples and retesting after the analyzer issues have been resolved).
- Assures preparation of tests for all patients, including performing the test calibrations and calibration verification studies as needed. Checks specimens, prepares reagents, and maintains adequate supplies. Electronically enters, or writes clinical reports and descriptions of laboratory care.
- Examines all patient’s lab work, reviews all testing (lab) and requests or performs diagnostic tests and refers tests to internal and external Laboratory facilities. Completes all tests requested by physicians and refers out when needed. Makes note of all assessments and records results. Reports results to appropriate individuals, calls critical values to appropriate provider and document critical reporting. Recognizes the need for timely reporting of laboratory data and shipment of products and specimens.
