Job Description

As an AV Safety Triage Engineer, you will play a critical role in helping Zoox evaluate and improve the behavioral safety and hardware performance of our autonomous vehicles. You will work closely with a variety of partners, including Legal, Policy, AI Software, Vehicle Development, Operations, Quality Assurance, System Design and Mission Assurance teams to support the triage of events and assess effect on safety. You will apply your understanding of transportation systems and safety to analyze vehicle behavior and help ensure our AVs are continually improving their performance. You will also serve as a bridge between onshore and offshore triage teams, developing and maintaining triage guidelines, training materials, and best practices. In this role, your ability to translate technical and regulatory requirements into consistent review processes will be essential.

In this role you will...

• Triage and assess AV events including both system behavior and hardware related anomalies for potential safety/legal/regulatory issues or system gaps, using contextual judgment grounded in safety, legal, and engineering principles.
• Collaborate with Legal, AI Software, and Safety Strategy teams to ensure appropriate interpretation of behavioral requirements and failure modes.
• Develop and maintain clear triage guidelines and criteria for both onshore and offshore triage teams.
• Lead or support training sessions for triage team members and maintain training materials and documentation.
• Assess complex or ambiguous events, identify patterns, and escalate high-impact findings to internal and cross-functional partners.
• Provide input to improve behavioral requirements based on observed edge cases and unclear decision boundaries.
• Support the development of structured metrics and miners to evaluate triage consistency and quality.
• Support regulatory reporting processes as needed.

Qualifications

• MS in Transportation Engineering, Systems Engineering, Civil Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Electrical Engineering, or a related field with a strong understanding of AV requirements, road user behavior, and traffic regulations.
• 2+ years of experience working with safety-critical systems in AV, Automotive, Transportation Engineering, or a closely related industry.
• Strong understanding of behavioral safety concepts and the ability to interpret vehicle behavior in real-world contexts.
• Experience working with cross-functional teams and communicating technical content clearly to both engineering and non-technical audiences.
• Strong organizational skills with attention to detail, especially in process development and documentation.

Bonus Qualifications

• PhD in Engineering or technical field
• Prior experience with AV safety or system behavior triage
• Familiarity with data tools (e.g., SQL, Python, scripting, visualization) to support analysis
• Familiarity with ISO 26262 or other functional safety standards

$180,000 - $210,000 a year

There are three major components to compensation for this position: salary, Amazon Restricted Stock Units (RSUs), and Zoox Stock Appreciation Rights. A sign-on bonus may be offered as part of the compensation package. The listed range applies only to the base salary. Compensation will vary based on geographic location and level. Leveling, as well as positioning within a level, is determined by a range of factors, including, but not limited to, a candidate's relevant years of experience, domain knowledge, and interview performance. The salary range listed in this posting is representative of the range of levels Zoox is considering for this position.
